Winter Radishes: Exploring the Notion of “Favorite”

According to Oxford Languages, here’s more about the word “favorite. An adjective that’s pronounced as /ˈfāv(ə)rət/, it’s defined this way: “preferred before all others of the same kind.”

According to Farmer Lee Jones, when asked about his favorite vegetable, his answer is as follows: What season is it?

Said another way, Mother Nature provides a natural rhythm to eating. So, Farmer Lee’s favorite veggie changes with the season—and, during the relevant time of year, his answer would be winter radishes. But that raises a follow-up question: which variety of winter radishes is Farmer Lee’s favorite?

Now, before we go any further, we want to caution you that the answer to this question can vary based on the day, but here are four varieties of winter radishes that Farmer Lee highlighted on the day he posted on the subject to Instagram.

Black Radish

One of his favorites is the black radish with a contrasting white center. Deliciously hot and peppery, this round and pungent radish offers up a delightfully crisp and crunchy texture with leaves and roots both marvelously edible. (You may hear this winter vegetable called the Black Spanish radish or Ehfurter radish.)

Purple Ninja Radish

Another one of Farmer Lee’s favorites is the purple ninja radish. Equally as delicious as his other favorite variety, the black radish, this variety comes with red skin and red flesh in eye-catching hues. As you move towards the core, this veggie’s flesh is white.

Flavor? Brilliantly spicy! Texture? Firm.

Lime Green Radish

Next up is the lime green radish! Some dishes call for an exceptionally spicy choice—and, in that case, this radish is perfect. Oblong in shape with a light green skin, white flesh, and crisp, crunchy texture, the flavor is marvelous! Simply marvelous.

Watermelon Radish

Then, when you want a peppery choice that catches the eye—but you don’t want a knock out level of wasabi-like flavor—you can choose the watermelon radish. In his Instagram post, Farmer Lee praised this as his favorite variety of his favorite vegetable for this time of year with its mild, sweet peppery flavor. (Caution: Remember that, because Farmer Lee loves so many vegetables, his favorite can change at any time with little notice!)

Skin color of the watermelon radish is white to light green with flesh that’s a wonderfully contrasting pink flesh that’s reminiscent of watermelon. When you choose this winter radish and slice it for your plates, it adds touches of stunning beauty.
